RAETTIG, Alvin E., Jr. Alvin E. Raettig, Jr. age 92, of Snellville, GA passed away March 22, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife, Meredith Lillian O'Brien Raettig and sister, Eleanor Chadwick and granddaughter, Michelle Raettig. He is survived by, daughters, Susan Luttrell and husband Paul, Ellen Hamilton and husband Mike; sons, Edward E. Raettig and wife Eyvette, Steve Raettig and wife Rosa; grandchildren, Debbie Witten and husband Jeremy, Brian Luttrell and wife Amanda, Sean Luttrell, Shannon Gillespie and husband Kevin, Matthew Raettig and wife Jordan, Alex Raettig, Tyler Raettig; great grandchildren, Katelyn Luttrell, Levi Raettig, and Kyle, Nathan and Ryan Witten. Mr. Raettig was born in Queens, NY on September 11, 1918. He moved to Decatur, GA in 1922. He attended Winona Park grade school, Decatur Junior High and Decatur Boys High School graduating in 1936. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from GA Tech in 1940. While at GA Tech he was on the Varsity Rifle Team, and served with the US Naval Reserve and served with the Georgia National Guard. After graduation he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Coast Artillery Reserve. During WWII Captain Raettig commanded the 99th Ordinance, Heavy Maintenance, Field Army Company at Ft. Benning. Next, Major Raettig was Chief of Ordinance Technical Section Army Forces Western Pacific Area Command, Manila, Philippine Islands. He married Meredith Lillian O'Brien on June 30, 1946. He then worked briefly for GA Power and the TVA. He was of the Methodist Faith. He was a Pack Master with the Cub Scouts, and later a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts in the Washington, DC area. He retired from Civil Service in 1974 while working for the Headquarters Dept of the Army as Deputy Director of Maintenance, ADCSLOG US Army, afterward returned to Georgia he worked for J.J. Finnigan Rail Car Company, Duluth, GA. He spent his entire life enjoying the outdoors and capturing it on film.
